TOKYO (Nikkei)--Panelists discussed ways to build information technology infrastructures and promote electronic commerce in Asia, in a session titled "Developing e-Asia: Regional Cooperation and Competition," held Wednesday as part of The Nihon Keizai Shimbun-sponsored Global Information Summit 2003.
Yang Seung-Taik, a researcher at the Electronics & Telecommunications Research Institute of South Korea, pointed out the need to reduce trade barriers over the medium to long term, saying e-commerce and free trade are two wheels of the same cart.
He also said Japan, China and South Korea should first try to sort out specific problems, such as rules on returning products bought online.
Yoshio Tsukio, a Public Management Ministry advisor, said, "It is important to take advantage of e-commerce, partly in order to build a broad economic zone in Asia."
Dong Yunting, chairman of the China Center of Information Industry Development, said improving the legal system will help build a common e-commerce platform.
